The Caucasus: Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri
After breakfast we set off into the heart of the Caucasus. After 40 minutes we reach the historic Ananuri Fortress on the Aragvi river, an area of extraordinary natural beauty where we spend some time taking photos and visiting the old sites. We continue to the town of Pasanauri and its river, known for river activities and rafting, then on to Gudauri, famous for its balcony on the Caucasus peaks near the Georgian–Russian border. The view is indescribable, with clouds wrapping the mountain tops. We take plenty of time for photos and the Caucasus scenery, then return to Tbilisi for the night.
After breakfast we leave Tbilisi for Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital 30 minutes away, to see the meeting of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers from Jvari hill. Then we drive to charming Borjomi, famous for its sulphur water and tall green mountains. We visit the national park, one of the largest in Europe, ride the cable car, see the waterfall and enjoy the sulphur pools.
